In this course teachers will develop a lesson plan integrating open educational resources for learners who cannot attend face-to-face classes. The course is particularly suited for teachers in developing country contexts who need to find and adapt open resources for teaching online as a result of COVID-19 disruptions. The course will help teachers to design appropriate solutions to support learners remotely and to develop authentic assessments.

The course will require 3-5 hours of time each week. Participants will learn from readings, videos, practical activities as well as discussions with fellow teachers and mentors. Learners can earn a Certificate of Completion.

Course Contents

Unit 1: Developing learning activities

Participants will:

  • Develop a learning activity
  • Develop before/during/after activities to promote engagement with the learning resources

Unit 2: Selecting and integrating OER in the learning activities

Participants will:

  • Identify challenges posed in the teaching of key concepts.
  • Find and adapt OER to supplement the prescribed learning resources to address learning and teaching challenges e.g. alternative texts and examples, graphics, animations of processes, videos of practicals and experiments, etc.

Unit 3: Designing learner and learning support in the use of OER

Participants will:

  • Review technology access options for the learner
  • Pre-empt learner concerns by developing FAQs and providing access to appropriate self-study guidelines for online learning
  • Use broadcast and digital apps to provide ongoing advice, support and feedback

Unit 4: Designing assessment and feedback

Participants will:

  • Develop authentic assessment activities
  • Develop assessment and marking rubrics
  • Develop online quizzes
  • Manage e-Portfolios.

Target audience

This course will be useful to teachers in secondary and primary schools as well as to officials connected with administration of school education and teacher training. The focus is primarily on countries in the Pacific region. All slide-shows and audio transcripts can be downloaded for studying offline to facilitate access where learners may not have reliable or affordable internet connectivity at home.

Outcomes of this Course

By the end of this short course, you should be better able to:

  1. Develop appropriate learning activities;
  2. Select, adapt and integrate OER effectively for online learning;
  3. Provide learner and learning support using online applications; and
  4. Design assessment and feedback online.

Certificates

A Certificate of Completion can be awarded depending on active engagement in the discussion forums and completion of one or both assessment activities.
